Verdict
Overall:

Costlier than an internal drive but good value for the size. The idiot-proof installation is a bonus.

Ugrading a hard disk isn't a difficult task but not everyone fancies poking about inside their computer with a screwdriver. If that's you and you're running out of hard disk space, there is an alternative but, unfortunately, what you save in screwdriver time you pay for in hard cash.

That alternative is an external hard disk and the Iomega HDD 250Gb is a king-size example. It'll set you back £309, compared to around £200 for an equivalent internal drive but this model is ready to use as soon as you've plugged it into your PC.

It can be plugged into either a USB 2 or FireWire port and while reading and writing to the Iomega HDD still won't be as fast as an internal drive, we doubt most people will notice. The drive will, of course, also work when connected to an ordinary USB port but it'll be so slow, you might as well not bother.

The 250Gb of space provided by the HDD is a lot - we repeat, a lot - of storage. Think a quarter of a million digital photos, 64,000 MP3 files, or even enough space to back up your entire internal hard disk and still leave room to spare.
