With memory cards vital to the operation of digital cameras, handheld computers and some mobile phones, the promise of one device that reads every format sounds like heaven for those of us growing ever more reliant on such gadgets.

Around half the size of a paperback novel, the 7-in-1 drive is solidly constructed and reads and writes Compact Flash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Smart Media, Secure Digital and Multi Media cards. That's not all - the slot at the bottom is for floppy disks. It doesn't read the emerging SDPro and Memory Stick Pro formats, but that's no big loss for now.

With many notebook manufacturers having dispensed with the 3.5in floppy drive altogether, and external USB models priced at around £40, the 7-in-1 looks like a pretty good bet with all of its extra functions.

Installation is as simple as plugging in a USB lead, which also provides power. The drive is immediately recognised by Windows XP and Me, appearing in My Computer as both removable and floppy disk drives. A driver CD is provided for Windows 98 users. An internal model is also available for £30.
