The Motorola C651 has a fairly standard design, with a navigational joystick sitting under the colour screen to help you pick your way through the user-friendly menus. To simplify matters further, there's a button just above this that gives easy access to the various submenus.

If you need to get your hands on online information when you're on the move you can connect to the web via GPRS or WAP and download ringtones and games to supplement those preloaded on the handset. If you can't find a ringtone that takes your fancy, basic software on the phone allows you to create your own.

The phone book lets you store up to 700 entries and in addition to text messaging and MMS, you can also stay in touch with contacts using instant messaging. And as this is a tri-band phone, you can use it in the US.

The built-in camera allows you to snap photos at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with three quality settings to choose from, including one that is recommended for snaps you plan to send via MMS. You can also change the exposure settings and apply colour filters to your photos.

If you buy directly from Virgin Mobile you'll pick up £10 of free airtime but even this sweetener doesn't detract from the fact that £120 is a lot to pay for what is a fairly standard phone.
