Ulead PhotoImpact 7 SE

Recently, Ulead has invigorated most of the products in its range. "The results have generally been pretty good and the newest product to emerge is the latest version of its PhotoImpact software.

PhotoImpact 7 has been specifically designed for the digital photography market and presents photographers with a collection of powerful tools to make the most from their snaps.

Providing you have the requisite 375MB of hard disk space, installing the software is straightforward. The interface is intuitive and once an image is acquired from either a scanner or digital camera, users either touch up their photo manually or go through a step-by-step wizard.

The Post-Processing Wizard will be the first port of call for inexperienced photo-editors, allowing for a multiplicity of operations such as straighten, crop, brightness and colour balance.

For the advanced user, an array of filters is at hand that adds fantastic-looking effects to any photo. These range from basic blur and sharpening tools to intricate 3D and warping filters.

New tools in PhotoImpact 7 include the Beautify Skin Enhancer, which automatically smoothes skin imperfections, and Auto Enhance for improving overall photo colour. Installing some of the third-party tools was a bit of a pain though.

This main improvement is in its web-design functions. There are plenty of special web effects for the creation of pop-up menus while a nifty GIF Animator tool helps unseasoned users create animated graphics for use on websites.

Another impressive feature is the EasyPalette pop-up window. This contains a visual list of each design attribute so brushes and buttons can be dragged onto the canvas.

PhotoImpact 7 is a great value product for beginners and experienced photo editors alike.
