The Magnia 3200 is one of a pair of workgroup servers offered by Toshiba and steps in as a replacement for the Magnia 3100. Physically, there is little difference as the 3200 has the same well-built chassis and offers good security features.

Three 5.25in bays are provided with a large hot-swap cage underneath with room for six hard disks, although the review system was only equipped with a single 18.2GB Fujitsu drive. The front door is separated into two halves so you can secure the drive bays and leave the expansion bays available or lock the lot away. A dual power supply cage with a single shared power socket is fitted but the price only includes a single supply unit.

Last year Toshiba moved away from its reliance on Intel motherboards and you will find Toshiba's own ServerWorks-equipped main board in residence. Dual processing is an option but the low price only includes a single Pentium III 1.26GHz module teamed up with a 256MB stick of ECC SDRAM memory occupying one of the four DIMM sockets. Processor cooling is a priority as both sockets are hidden behind a mighty plastic fan cage which is easily removable.

Toshiba uses a special feature board to deliver graphics, network and SCSI services. This full-length PCI card uses ATi Rage XL graphics and Intel Pro100+ network adapter chipsets and a fast LSI Ultra160 SCSI chipset.

Toshiba's Server Setup utility assists with server installation offering a tidy menu system. HarnessEye/WEB utility offers good local and remote browser based management facilities. Information about motherboard voltages, temperatures and cooling fan is gathered by a local agent and passed to servers running a management proxy

Alerting is good as the software can be used to send out e-mail warnings and if the server hangs an automatic server restart (ASR) feature will reboot it.

The Magnia 3200 is well built with a tempting price tag and although the feature board is unusual there is plenty of room for expansion.
