Combining separate pieces of office equipment into one multifunction device can make good business sense. The Muratec F360 is such a device that incorporates a monochrome fax, copier, scanner and printer.

Fast operation and a variety of optional attachments make it a desirable device but, for most small businesses, its price might be too high.

For printing purposes, the Muratec F360 is capable of a claimed 16ppm at a resolution of 600dpi. It has full PCL5e compatibility and a parallel interface for connection to a desktop PC or print server.

A PCL6 option is available for £449.99 (ex. VAT). To print directly across a network, an NP200 Network Print Interface option (£444.99 ex. VAT) can be purchased.

Sending faxes from the device is a quick and easy operation. Utilising Joint Bi-level Image experts Group (JBIG)compression, faxes are typically sent and received in under three seconds, cutting down on call charges.

A second line attachment can also be installed so that you can send and receive faxes simultaneously. Internal memory of 8Mb can store up to 650 A4 pages, while the auto-dialer can store up to 300 numbers. The IF300 Internet Fax option (£499.99 ex. VAT) allows the Muratec F360 to send faxes across the internet via your email server.

The digital copier engine handles the other features of scanning and copying. Up to 16ppm can be copied, with 256 levels of greyscale. Up to 30ppm can be scanned using Twain compatibility. Quad Access technology ensures that scanning, copying, printing and faxing can be done simultaneously.

For a unit with this much functionality, the overall dimensions of 361 x 465 x 528mm are compact, but it does weigh 19.9kg. The control panel on the front of the machine is well thought out, with all buttons and options within easy reach, although it can be hard to interpret information on the LCD. There's software included for print monitoring, scan manipulation and general status.

The Muratec F360 is a very capable all-in-one solution that works well and is hard to fault in its operation. The only issues are its high price and relatively small amount of memory, although you can always upgrade at extra expense.
