Multifunction devices have conflicting goals, as they pack as much functionality as possible into a small footprint at an affordable price. In the past, juggling these goals has led to compromises in the quality of individual components and in usability.

HP is successfully challenging this perception with its Officejet d155xi, a jack-of-all-trades that delivers great results in all areas of printing, scanning, faxing and copying. It's also shipped with a double-sided adapter, a 250-sheet paper tray and a Jetdirect 200m print server network connector.

The d155xi has an array of front panel buttons that initially look daunting, but are neatly arranged. This makes it easy to operate as a standalone device without recourse to software.

There are button groupings for fax, copy and scan functions, as well as a central keypad with menu buttons and an LCD. The fax grouping has 10 one-touch speed-dial buttons or you can scroll through up to 130 entries with another button. There are two start buttons - one each for black and colour - and data is transferred through a 33.6Kbit/s internal fax modem.

In copy mode, the input resolution varies from 300 x 300spi in fast mode using the ADF to 1,200 x 1,200spi in best mode using the platen and selecting photo paper.

Output quality is superb and, with standard paper, the normal mode is as good as the best mode, only faster. Scanning relies on the software, so there are fewer buttons. The scanner's optical resolution is 1,200 x 4,800spi, which is boosted to 9,600spi with interpolation.

Printing reaches a maximum resolution of 2,400 by 1,200dpi and a maximum monochrome printing speed of 19ppm. The unit also boasts three memory card slots for SmartMedia, CompactFlash Type I and II cards and Sony Memory Sticks.

Price: £549.99 (ex. VAT).
