The latest version of Amacom's Flip2Disk external hard disk storage product offers a massive 80GB of storage, which is encased in an attractive, but rugged, enclosure. One of its main attractions is the number of interfaces available for both PC and Macintosh use. As standard, it ships with a USB 2.0 interface, but you can also buy connectors for FireWire (£29.95), parallel port(£25.95), 16or 32-bit PC Card (£20.95/£39.95), an internal E-IDE docking station (Diskstation, £29.95) or Amacom's Flip PC Card connector (£29.95) - all prices ex. VAT.
Another great feature of the Flip2Disk is the supplied FlipBack disaster recovery software. On installation, this allows you to make a mirror copy of your PC's hard drive, including all the data, partition and boot sector information, and automatically synchronise this with your PC every time you connect it. So, in the case of total disk failure, you simply replace the failed hard drive with the Flip2Disk - in a laptop you could remove the Flip2Disk from its enclosure, but on a PC, you'd need to use the internal Diskstation. FlipBack supports multiple partitions and drives, so it's a very handy tool for those frequently out of reach of an IT department.
Although it's powered through the USB 2.0 cable, a rather short PS/2 power adapter is included in case your USB controller can't provide enough power. A tough carrying case is also bundled as standard.
The Flip2Disk is easy to use and could be very useful for notebook PC owners, although if you start adding interfaces, its price can rapidly escalate.
