AppSight 3.5 is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for Windows applications. It's non-invasive and, because it analyses application activity at several levels, can be used to support a range of activities.
Help desk staff, for example, might use it to diagnose user problems, while developers can use it as a debugging tool. It also has a more general use for monitoring production systems.
Several components make up AppSight. At its heart is a set of so-called black box recorders that continually log activity on host systems. The data recorded is configurable and can range from user keystrokes and screen grabs to detailed system activity, such as the loading and unloading of DLLs, registry calls, ODBC operations and IIS web server activity.
Three types of black box are supported, all of which are written to run on Windows hosts. The standard version can be configured either locally or remotely, with the local user also able to control its operation.
An invisible black box can only be configured and managed remotely, with the third type written as an NT service to enable monitoring even when no users are logged on.
An independent Management Server consolidates information gathered by the black boxes with three consoles available to view the data. The first of these, the Black Box Manager, is also used to manage the recorders.
The System Level console is for analysis only and the User Level console is limited to identifying user errors. Alerts can also be configured with emails or network messages issued when particular events occur.
An enormous amount of information is gathered by the black boxes, but there are useful filtering facilities in the consoles, as well as tools for graphing performance data and inspecting the set up of the monitored systems.
Installation is straightforward and the user interface is well laid out. However, a high degree of technical knowledge is required to make best use of AppSight 3.5's features.
Pricing depends on the number of black boxes and consoles involved and configuration help and operator training are also usually included. Contact developer Mutek for more information.
