Goldmine Business Contact Manager is aimed at small businesses or teams within larger organisations that need to share data and manage sales processes.

It places a heavy emphasis on team-based activities, which is one of its strongest points.

In addition to storing basic details such as names, addresses and histories, you can manage marketing campaigns and gauge the success of sales initiatives.

New additions to this version include iCAL-compliant calendaring tools, which enable Goldmine users to schedule meetings with users of other iCAL packages, such as Microsoft's Outlook.

The Outlook-style taskbar introduced in Goldmine 5.5 has been expanded to include customisation tools, so you can create up to 20 customised panes.

Previous versions of Goldmine suffered from awkward installation features and poor UK customisation. Most of these problems have been eliminated through the introduction of a new installer, which provides clearer options for localised installations.

In addition, the selection of tutorials help to make the product less daunting for new users.

Data synchronisation has also been improved. Once you've worked through Goldmine's Synchronisation wizard to establish settings for data transfer, the process can be carried out via a single button press.

Add-on GoldSync tools enable users to dial into a server remotely and initiate synchronisation, but GoldSync costs an extra £139.99 (ex. VAT) per user. Tools for synchronising Pocket PC and Palm OS devices are included as standard.

One of Goldmine's strongest features is its ability to link to other applications through third-party add-ons. Goldmine Plus for Sage Line 50 (from £99.99 ex. VAT, depending on volume) is one such example.

Existing Goldmine users might benefit from some of the new features, but there are no major changes in this release. However, Goldmine Business Contact Manager is still a very worthwhile tool.
