PCsync 3.0 is a suite of tools for transferring files and settings between machines. This includes migrating files between PCs, managing MP3 music files and sharing a folder remotely over the internet.
However, some features could be more flexible, and the inclusion of a serial and parallel port cable for data transfer is a retrograde move.
Its main interface comprises a four-paned window, showing folders on your local hard disk drive, as well as remote connections. From this main area you can control file movement between different computers as well as virtual drives.
At its most basic level, PCsync enables two machines to be connected via a serial, parallel or USB connection, so that files can be transferred between them.
It's also possible to share files with other users via the internet. This uses PCsync's Surfup service. You can define whether connecting machines can access files via LapLink's internet service, or only through another copy of PCsync.
Access to a shared folder is by user name and password. However, once a folder has been made public, there's no means of removing the share information.
To access folders on a PC located behind a firewall, the appropriate ports need to be configured to accept data from PCsync. Although the port information is listed on LapLink's website, you'll need to be familiar with the workings of your firewall to use this part of the product.
The PCMover tool covers migration of settings and files between PCs. This is useful if you're moving between an old and new machine. There's support for all major office suites as well as over 45 other applications, including Lotus Notes, Outlook and Norton AntiVirus.
PCsync 3.0 is a comprehensive selection of file transfer utilities. However, it could be improved with a faster cable connection and better management capabilities for shared drives.
