Verdict

A good choice for the PDA power user but an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary update.

Hand in hand with the Visor Neo, Handspring has released a new upmarket PDA, the Visor Pro. It features 16MB of Ram, which is the most you'll find in any Palm OS device at present. This is plenty for storing your contacts and appointments, although AvantGo and Vindigo fans will no doubt quickly use it up.

Like the Neo, the new Pro runs at twice the speed of its predecessors, thanks to the new 33MHz DragonBall VZ processor, although you'll probably have to look hard to notice the difference. Like the Prism and the Edge, the sealed case of the Pro houses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

With its energy efficient 3in monochrome LCD, this handheld should let you go a fair while between charges. Unlike most Handspring models, the Pro is offered in only one colour: a warm silver with a clip-on, see-through, smoked cover.

The Pro's screen is the same as the Neo's - a backlit monochrome display, supporting 4bit greyscale (16 shades of grey) - and includes all the basic features of the Visor line of products, such as USB support and MacOS compatibility out of the box.

Perhaps the most interesting addition to the Pro is the Fast Lookup feature in the address book. First seen in the Visor Edge, this function lets you quickly bring up any name simply by pressing the six buttons below the screen with one hand: no stylus is required. We tried stumping it with a test database filled to the brim with 1,700 contacts and it worked without fail.

Another interesting touch is the Pro's Silent Alarm. This sets off a blinking LED, which is useful in places where an audible alarm might be disruptive. The only real surprise is that the Pro runs an updated version of Palm OS 3.5.2H3, rather than the latest OS, 4.0.
