Inkjet printers keep improving all the time but, when it comes to print speeds, nothing so far has been able to compete with laser printers.
However, Canon is trying to take a share of the business market with its new Bubble Jet S750, a fast business inkjet printer.
It performed well in our test, beating every printer in the November 2001 group test. We managed an average of 6.7ppm (pages per minute) in our 50-page plain text test, and close to 5.9ppm in our mixed-content test.
The ink used by Canon is dye ink rather than a pigment-based and this results in occasional feathering on the text. One shortfall of the S750 is its photo quality, as our test photo was reproduced with too much blue. Unfortunately, there is no manual adjustment to change this.
Installation was very straightforward and the printer comes with both parallel and USB interfaces. When the printer is in use the drivers provide information on how many pages there are left to print as well as a gauge on how much ink is left in the cartridges.
The overall construction of the printer isn't brilliant, as both the input and output trays are very flimsy and you can only load 100 sheets of photocopy paper. It's also quite noisy in standard mode, although there is a quiet mode that slows it down.
On the bright side, replacement ink cartridges are fairly cheap: a black cartridge should set you back around £8.99 ex VAT while any one of the colour cartridges cost £6.99 ex VAT.
Canon claims an average of 310 pages out of the black and 450 pages of colour at five per cent coverage. Overall, the Bubble Jet S750 is a good printer that is affordable to run.
