Since it launched the Zip disk almost 10 years ago, Iomega has entertained us with an innovative, if not always widely adopted, range of storage devices, but with the HDD 250GB Desktop Hard Drive it's back to basics. It may not be the first large-capacity external hard disk to hit UK shores, but it does the job very well.
Although internal hard drives of similar capacity cost less than £200, the sheer simplicity of this plug-and-play external device makes it worthy of consideration. The Iomega HDD 250GB supports both Firewire and USB2 connections and comes with a separate cable for each. In tests we managed to transfer 1GB of data to the drive in two minutes and 22 seconds using Firewire and two minutes, 52 seconds using USB2. Whichever interface you choose, you're unlikely to be disappointed with the performance you get.
Along with the cables, Iomega includes its own Automatic Backup Software and Norton Ghost 2003 in the box. The first is an incredibly easy-to-use application, designed to help archive important files and folders and to set schedules for automatically backing up data. A handy wizard guides inexperienced users through the process, while advanced users can click on the Customise button to choose specific target drives or set filters for specific file types. Restoring files is just as simple, just drag and drop your archived files back to where they belong. Ghost provides more heavyweight hard disk imaging facilities.
All things considered the Iomega 250GB is an excellent piece of kit that's simple to install and comes with some good software. It's certainly expensive, but it'll be a while before you eat your way through all those megabytes.
