Available in four shades, the Ixus i from Canon is clearly trying to appeal to the fashion conscious. Our review model was an attractive Pearl White, but it also comes in Classic Bronze, Piano Black or the more traditional Platinum Silver.

While the Ixus i houses a 4megapixel CCD, its diminutive size means an optical zoom lens has been sacrificed. You do get a 5.7x digital zoom to play with but, as anyone who has ever used this technology will tell you, it results in rapid image degradation.

The petite lens has a dramatic effect on image quality. Close-up shots appear pinched at the centre, while our resolution tests highlighted the Ixus i's inability to pick up fine detail.

Considering its size, this will be a favourite to take to parties and on nights out, which is probably the reason for the inclusion of an auto-focus lamp for low-light conditions. However, the auto focus system was rather optimistic when it came to close-ups. During our macro tests the focus indicator light would always flash green to signify the shot was perfectly in focus even when it obviously wasn't.

In terms of manual features, the Ixus i enables you to alter white balance, ISO settings, metering and exposure compensation, while a range of effects and a movie mode with audio are also available.

Those wanting pixel-perfect images will certainly have to look elsewhere. However, Canon has done a good job in designing the Ixus i as a stylish digital camera that will fit in just about any pocket.

What's more, it comes with a sizeable 32MB Secure Digital card.
