Visioneer 9750

The Visioneer 9750 is a fairly compact, flatbed scanner designed with the business user in mind. It scans at 24- or 48bit colour and offers a maximum optical scan resolution of 2,400dpi. The top surface of the grey unit, which lifts up to expose the scanner bed, houses an automatic document feeder that holds up to 50 pages, which significantly cuts down on the amount of manual intervention needed for larger scanning jobs.

There are a mere three buttons on the unit itself, offering one-touch copying, scanning and scan-to-email functions. More detailed settings require the use of the scanner software on the accompanying CD-Rom. The interface is clear and straightforward to use and offers the user a good range of options.

Visioneer claims scan speeds of up to 20 monochrome pages per minute at 200dpi resolution in auto-feed mode. Colour scans, especially high resolution, are more of a challenge for any scanner, but our tests showed they were relatively good. The 9750 dealt with a colour A4 scan at 300dpi and 24bit colour in slightly more than 12 seconds, but took 12 mins, 49 secs to scan the same page at 2,400dpi and 24bit colour. Set to 48bit colour scanning, the 9750 took 25 minutes 20 seconds to scan the same page at 2,400dpi.

There is a good selection of software bundled with the unit, including Scansoft's Paperport 9, which offers image and electronic document management features, as well as built-in viewers for pdf, Word, Excel and Wordperfect documents. You can also scan to pdf.
