Verdict

Pros:
Fast; robust; multiformat.

Cons:
Heavy and bulky.

Verdict:
Not the kind of drive you'd really want to drag around with your notebook, but it's versatile and easy to use.

Whereas some manufacturers are designing ultra-slim external DVD writers, Iomega has decided to build its latest DVD burner with functionality in mind rather than portability.

The Super DVD Writer lives up to its name in terms of its versatility, and can read and write to all discs including Ram. However, it's not capable of reading DVD-Ram discs housed in a protective cartridge.

Being able to write to DVD+R media at an impressive eight-speed, the Super DVD Writer certainly isn't sluggish, although it does drop to four-speed for DVD-R and to three-speed for DVD-Ram media.

Thanks to its USB2 connection, installation is no problem at all and you get a range of software. The package includes two Iomega titles, Hotburn Pro and Automatic Backup, along with utilities such as Sonic MyDVD and Adobe Photoshop Album 2.

External DVD writers are usually of most interest to those with notebooks, but due to its bulky size and hefty weight the Super DVD Writer isn't the most portable of devices. Although notebook users might want to look elsewhere, the Super DVD Writer would be a useful device to share among a group of desktop PCs. A pain-free installation process means it can be hot-swapped between PCs with the minimum of fuss.

Overall, the decent writing speeds of the Super DVD Writer and its capability to burn to a multitude of formats impressed us, while its robust design will ensure it's capable of taking a few knocks, unlike some of the slim top-loading DVD writers we've seen. Despite this, the fact that it weighs 1.5kg and demands a fair bit of desk space may be enough to dissuade many from parting with their cash.
