The FX Ultra/1100XT Golden Sample is the latest graphics card from Gainward. It uses the Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 XT chipset, which has attracted positive press since its introduction this year.
This card has a 450MHz GPU and 128MB of DDR memory clocked at 290MHz (780MHz). A 256bit memory interface allows a maximum bandwidth of 28.8Gbytes/sec - twice that of the similarly priced FX 5700 Ultra.
Benchmark test results were largely in line with previous 5900 XT cards, but in some cases the card surpassed expectations. In 3Dmark03, it scored 6,276 - slightly more than that achieved by the Gigabyte FX 5900 XT
The card managed an Unreal Tournament frame-rate of 79.45 frames per second (fps). We also tested using the demanding Far Cry benchmark in which the FX Ultra/1100XT achieved 32.75fps.
More strenuous tests at a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 with 8x full-scene anti-aliasing (FSAA) and 8x antistrophic filtering returned a 3Dmark score of 796, good enough to propel Unreal Tournament at 22.74fps. Far Cry chugged along at only 2.85fps.
Gainward has put together a relatively good retail package with the FX Ultra/1100XT. On the card are digital, analogue and TV-out ports. Inside the box are TV-out, Molex and analogue-to-digital adapters. A copy of WinDVD 4 has been included, but there are no games.
It may not be able to power the most demanding titles at the highest resolutions, but the 1100XT is a strong mid-range card and offers great value.
