The Evesham Axis Xcelsior features AMD's latest home processor, the Athlon 64 4000+. While the clock speed doesn't reach the same heights as the Pentium range, its 1MB of L2 cache and dual-channel memory support aid performance.
The Xcelsior is based on an MSI K8N Neo 2 motherboard, designed around the Nforce 3 250 chipset. The board features four Dimm sockets and our system came with two 512MB modules, providing 1GB of Ram.
Evesham has taken advantage of the motherboard's Sata connectors and installed a pair of 160GB Western Digital WD1600 hard drives in a striped Raid configuration. The drives are complemented by a 16 speed dual-layer Sony DVD rewriter. Integrated sound has been bypassed in favour of a Creative Audigy 2 ZS, a good match for the seven-channel Creative Inspire T9700 speakers.
In tests, the Xcelsior's performance was impressive. A Sysmark 2004 score of 203 places it in similar territory to PCs based on 3.6GHz Pentium 4 processors, while its Radeon X800 XT-based graphics card clocked up 12,319 in 3Dmark 2003 and an Unreal Tournament 2003 score of 107fps. If you're looking for a gaming PC, it doesn't get much better.
The Xcelsior is one of the fastest PCs around, and there's room for expansion. However, this level of performance doesn't come cheap and, at over £2,000, it's for those with a big budget.
