With its distinctive serial/parallel link cable and file transfer utility software, Laplink was once the only way to move large files between a desktop PC and a laptop before network interface options.
The product is now celebrating its twentieth year, with a significant upgrade focusing on remote access over the internet.
The Everywhere Deluxe package is a collection of three products. Laplink Gold 11 connects two PCs over cable or infra-red connections.
As well as supporting conventional file transfer using side-by-side Explorer windows, Laplink Gold 11 lets you take remote control of one PC from the other, synchronise data and make drive images. A serial/parallel link cable is included, along with a voucher for a free USB link cable.
Next up is Remote Network Accelerator, a connection tool to streamline office networks to offer enhanced performance for remote workers. This is worthy and simplistically laid out, but perhaps a little over the top for the average Laplink user.
Finally, the package includes Laplink Everywhere itself. This is a brilliant yet simple internet-based remote access system for file transfers.
All you need for connecting to your remote desktop PC is a web browser. Everywhere uses 128bit encryption and does not require you to take down your firewall.
Gold 11 and Remote Network Accelerator are conventional software products, but Everywhere is a subscription service, and the price only covers the first year.
