Go To My PC 4 Pro is a web-based remote access service, which avoids complications with virtual private networks and firewalls as it runs through an HTML interface that the majority of firewalls do not monitor or block.
Online registration is quick and easy, and the software itself is just 1.4MB. Once installed and running, an icon sits in the System Tray.
Access to the host PC is gained by going to the Go To My PC website, logging on and selecting the PC you wish to access. There is a Java-based universal viewer as well as a native viewer for Windows. One of the best features is the pen mode, where any 'guest' can draw on the screen of the host PC. Files can also be transferred and the screen is scaled to fit.
Security is very important, so access is controlled by several layers of passwords. Each account has a password and it is also possible to assign a local password to a host PC. All of the information transferred is compressed and encrypted and there is a visible warning when another PC logs onto the host.
Version 4 has included several new features that make Go To My PC even more attractive. It is now possible to access host PCs from a PocketPC, with an update for Palm users scheduled for this year. The Administration Centre generates reports on how users have been accessing their PCs.
This is a powerful product for allowing remote access to PCs. There are alternatives, such as One Red Square, but it lacks the same freedom for guest access.
