The popular Opera web browser is being made available
free of charge to all computer users.
A free version has been available for some time, but this carried banner
advertising to cover the costs of generating the code. Users were able to pay
for the full version without the banner advertising and get enhanced service and
support.
"Today we invite the entire internet community to use Opera and experience
web browsing as it should be," said Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive at Opera
Software.
"Removing the ad banner and licensing fee will encourage many new users to
discover the speed, security and unmatched usability of the Opera browser."
The company is hoping that by making the browser free the increase in take-up
will cover the lost subscription revenue. Opera users can still pay for enhanced
email support for the browser.
The latest build, version 8.5, is available for download
