Domain name raid to 'spread the word of piracy'

Swedish file-sharing site Pirate Bay has cocked a snook at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) by taking ownership of IFPI.com.

The domain was donated by an unnamed owner and Pirate Bay has now occupied it under the title International Federation of Pirates Interests.

The move will exacerbate tensions between the two organisations, which have been waging an ongoing feud over copyright violation.

A Pirate Bay administrator told the TorrentFreak blog: "International Federation of Pirates Interests is the new federation we're starting in order to get the word of piracy spread. It's not a hack. Someone just gave us the domain name."

Pirate Bay supports file sharing in violation of copyright and has been under increasing pressure from copyright organisations and the police over its activities.

However, Pirate Bay has complained that it is being attacked by hackers hired by record companies to shut it down, and has had its database of users stolen in a hacking attack.
